UK Faces £1bn Compensation Demand from Jingye Over British Steel Nationalisation

by admin477351

Chinese steel manufacturer Jingye has launched formal proceedings to seek compensation from the UK government after the nationalisation of British Steel’s Scunthorpe plant. This move follows unsuccessful negotiations over financial settlements, prompting Jingye to invoke a UK–China bilateral investment treaty. Industry insiders suggest the compensation claim could exceed £1 billion.

The contention arises from the UK government’s decision to take control of British Steel, citing national security concerns and the necessity of maintaining domestic steel production capabilities. This intervention was aimed at preventing the potential shutdown of the plant and averting significant job losses. Jingye, which acquired British Steel in 2020, had earlier contemplated closure due to financial constraints and global steel market oversupply, but the UK government’s intervention ensured the plant’s continued operation under state control.

Jingye argues for compensation, citing financial losses and investments made since taking over British Steel. Meanwhile, the UK government defends its decision as crucial for safeguarding strategic industrial capacity and employment. The dispute appears poised to proceed to international arbitration if no agreement is reached during the treaty’s consultation period, with analysts cautioning that this case could further strain economic relations between the UK and China.

In the midst of this legal battle, the UK is re-evaluating its steel industry policy, including import restrictions and the potential restructuring of the domestic steel sector. This review is part of a broader strategic effort to prepare for long-term shifts in steel production and ownership.
