As tensions between the United States and Iran continue to escalate, President Donald Trump has called on Americans to tolerate increased gasoline prices. During a rally held in New York, Trump expressed that paying “a tiny little bit more” at the pump is a worthwhile sacrifice to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. He also hinted at the possibility of declaring the Strait of Hormuz a U.S. territory if the U.S. triumphs in the ongoing conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passageway for global oil and natural gas shipments, remains a focal point in the standoff. Iran has dismissed Trump’s remarks, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi maintaining that Iran will keep control over the strait and continue its blockade until the U.S. acknowledges what he termed as its defeat. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran has yet to decide on resuming talks with the U.S., and emphasized that shipping through the strait will not recommence until Iran’s demands are met.
This geopolitical friction has significantly disrupted tanker traffic through the waterway, leading to a rise in crude oil prices and consequently, higher fuel costs for consumers. The average gasoline price in the U.S. has climbed to about $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, Brent crude prices are poised for a notable weekly surge, reflecting the market’s volatility.
The economic repercussions of this conflict are being felt on both sides. In Iran, President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed the nation’s soaring inflation to the U.S. blockade, sanctions, and restrictions on Iranian oil exports. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has hinted at imposing further financial sanctions on Tehran, as diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire remain at a standstill.
