In a significant development, Heathrow Airport has been overtaken by Istanbul Airport as Europe’s busiest hub for air travel. During the month of July, Istanbul Airport processed 8.15 million passengers, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This shift marks a notable change in the rankings, with Heathrow experiencing a 1.5% drop in passenger numbers compared to the same period last year, while Istanbul saw a 2.3% increase in traffic.
The decline in passenger numbers at Heathrow has been partly attributed to the disruptions caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This situation has intensified the calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s proposed third runway. Currently operating at near full capacity with two runways, the expansion, estimated at £33 billion, aims to boost Heathrow’s annual capacity to approximately 150 million passengers, thereby enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism prospects.
Meanwhile, Istanbul Airport, which began operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and operates continuously throughout the day and night. The airport currently has three runways, with plans to introduce a fourth by the end of 2026. This infrastructure advantage has contributed to its growing passenger numbers and its ability to overtake Heathrow in the rankings.
In contrast to Heathrow’s challenges, other UK airports, such as London Stansted and Manchester, have reported record passenger numbers for July. London Stansted handled 3.1 million passengers, while Manchester saw 3.4 million, marking their busiest month ever. These figures highlight the shifting dynamics within the European aviation sector and the competitive pressures faced by major airports like Heathrow.
